Is Your Broadband Fast Enough? How to Check in 2 Minutes
Buffering, slow web pages, and dropping video calls? This plain-English guide shows you how to check your broadband speed and understand whether it's fast enough for what you do. From TechMates in Boston, Lincolnshire.
If your TV keeps buffering, web pages crawl, or video calls freeze and stutter, it's natural to wonder: is my broadband simply too slow? It's a great question — and you can find out for yourself in about two minutes. Here's how, with no technical knowledge needed.
What "speed" actually means
Broadband speed is usually measured in "megabits per second", shortened to Mbps. The bigger the number, the faster things load. There are two figures:
- Download speed — how quickly things come to you (watching TV, loading pages, receiving emails). This is the one that matters most day to day.
- Upload speed — how quickly things go from you (sending photos, your camera during a video call).
You don't need to memorise any of this — you just need to know how to check it.
How to test your broadband speed
A speed test is free and takes a moment:
- Make sure nothing big is running — pause any TV streaming or downloads so the test is fair.
- Open your web browser (the app you use to visit websites).
- Search for "speed test" and choose a well-known free checker, such as the one from Google or Ofcom.
- Press the "Go" or "Start" button and wait while it measures your connection.
- Note the download number in Mbps — that's the figure that matters most.
For the most accurate result, test on a computer or phone connected to your Wi-Fi while standing near your router.
So, is your speed "enough"?
As a rough, friendly guide for a typical household:
- Up to about 10 Mbps — fine for emails, browsing, and the odd video call, but it may struggle with TV streaming, especially if more than one person is online.
- Around 30–60 Mbps — comfortable for most homes: streaming, video calls, and several devices at once.
- 100 Mbps or more — plenty for a busy household with lots of devices and high-quality streaming.
If your test comes back far lower than what you're paying for, something may be holding it back.
Slow Wi-Fi isn't always slow broadband
Here's a common surprise: often the broadband coming into your home is fine, but the Wi-Fi signal around the house is weak — particularly in back bedrooms or upstairs. In that case, you don't need a faster broadband package; you need your Wi-Fi set up better. Simple changes, like moving the router or adding a booster, can transform things.
